Every Contradiction
Has a Parent.

A paradox is not a mystery. It is a receipt — an assumption taken on credit long ago, arriving at the door with what it cost.

Seven frameworks are audited here, entry by entry, and every entry is walked back to the premise that manufactures it. Then the same ruler is turned on SDT. This is the narrative pass: the people, what they said when the contradiction landed on their desk, the repair each field attempted, and what the repair cost. Every count on this page is tallied live from the entries themselves — nothing is asserted that the list below does not contain.

Before anything is counted

The ruler, laid down first

Five severities. Only two of them are paradoxes proper. The distinction is set before the count begins and it does not move at the end — the others' contradictions are not softened into gaps, and SDT's unfinished derivations are not inflated into contradictions.

Logical

The framework's own axioms imply X and not-X. A contradiction, inside the walls.

Self-limiting

The theory forecasts its own death — infinities, singularities, a place where its equations stop being true and say so.

Fine-tuning

A quantity set to absurd precision with no reason available inside the theory.

Empirical

Something measured that the framework cannot hold without a bolt-on.

Interpretational

Stories that agree on every number and disagree on what exists. The theory cannot choose.

Incompleteness

A question the framework does not answer and does not pretend to. Named, not counted as a wound.

The rule that keeps this straight

A gap is not a paradox. A theory can finish a derivation. It cannot finish a contradiction — it can only abandon the premise that caused it. Hold that sentence; the whole page turns on it.
Act One · Special Relativity · 1905

The substrate is abolished

Generating premise: no preferred frame, and simultaneity is a matter of who is asking. Take the medium out from under the light and every question about who really moved loses its answer — not because the answer is hidden, but because the theory no longer has a place to keep one.

Ehrenfest's disk, 1909. Spin it up: the rim segments contract along their motion, the radius does not. The circumference the geometry demands and the circumference the rim can supply come apart, and C/2R walks off π. Drag anywhere on the disk to spin it by hand.

Einstein did not discover that the ether was absent. He discovered that the equations did not need it, and removed it — and the removal is the single event from which every paradox in this act descends.

Lorentz had the same transformations first, with a medium underneath them and rods that shortened because they were moving through something. Einstein's version threw the something away and kept the arithmetic. On every measurement made since, the two agree. That fork was never closed by experiment — it was closed by preference, and it is still standing open at the far end of this page.

What follows from the removal is bookkeeping about the word now. Two clocks, no medium, and no fact about which of them is at rest: the twin who comes home younger needs an asymmetry the theory just abolished, so it gets smuggled back through acceleration. The pole fits in the barn and does not fit in the barn. Only the two-way speed of light is ever measured; the one-way speed is a convention you choose, and the choosing is invisible in the results.

Then Paul Ehrenfest spun a disk, and the bookkeeping broke. A rigid body in rotation is not a puzzle about observers — the rim is contracted and the radius is not, so C/2R ≠ π, and no choice of frame repairs it. This one is a contradiction, and Einstein took it seriously enough that it walked him out of flat geometry altogether. The rigid body was the casualty. The continuum was the replacement, and the continuum is Act Two.

The repair

Abandon rigid bodies and rebuild rotation in a geometry that can bend — curved spacetime, 1915.

What the repair cost

The disk was fixed by handing physics a continuum with no shortest length. Everything in Act Two grows in that gap.

Act Two · General Relativity · 1915

A continuum with no floor

Generating premise: spacetime is dynamical, continuous, and has no shortest length; gravity is its geometry. Give attraction a continuum to work in and nothing anywhere in the theory can stop a collapse. It runs all the way down, and the equations say so themselves.

The well that has no bottom. As the act runs, the profile deepens without limit and the curvature readout climbs off the scale; a marker released outside crosses the horizon ring and does not come back, and neither does what it was carrying. Drag to release another.

In 1965 Penrose proved that the infinity at the centre is not an artefact of bad coordinates. It is generic. A theory had produced, from its own machinery, a theorem stating where it stops being true.

Einstein disliked singularities and spent real effort trying to argue them out of physical existence. He lost that argument to his own field equations. The same theorem class, extended backwards, puts one at the beginning of the universe — so the two boundaries of cosmic history are both places where the description hands in its notice.

Then the horizon got a temperature. Hawking's 1974 calculation made black holes radiate, and the radiation came out exactly thermal — carrying no imprint of what fell in. A pure state goes in; a mixed state comes out; unitarity, the one thing quantum mechanics never negotiates, is violated. That is a contradiction between the two best theories physics owns, and it has stood for fifty years.

Every attempt to close it charges a fee. Entangle the late radiation with the early radiation to save unitarity, and monogamy of entanglement forces a wall of hard quanta at the horizon — which incinerates the equivalence principle, the seed idea of the whole theory. Quantise gravity canonically and time itself drops out of the equation: Ĥ|ψ⟩ = 0, the wavefunction of the universe does not evolve, nothing happens. And in 1949 Gödel handed Einstein a birthday present — an exact rotating solution containing closed timelike curves. Einstein's published reply worried, in print, about whether such solutions ought to be ruled out on physical grounds. Nothing in the theory rules them out.

The repair

Quantise gravity, and let the horizon's quantum structure carry the information out.

What the repair cost

Canonical quantisation deleted time. The unitary rescue built a firewall. Fifty years in, you must still break quantum mechanics, the equivalence principle, or locality — the choice is yours and it is compulsory.

Act Three · Quantum Mechanics · 1925

Two laws, and no rule for which one fires

Generating premise: a wavefunction that evolves smoothly and deterministically, and also collapses — discontinuously, at no stated moment, for no stated reason. The theory ships with two evolution laws and no clause anywhere inside it saying when the second one takes over. Every entry in this act is that one fact wearing a different coat.

Top: U — the packet spreads, smooth, linear, reversible, exactly as written. Bottom: R — one outcome, one spike, irreversible, nowhere in the equations. The switch between them has no hand on it. Click to fire R by hand; that is precisely as principled as the theory manages.

The cat was never a mascot. Schrödinger built it in 1935 as an objection — a burlesque, his word — to show that if you take linearity seriously it walks straight out of the laboratory and into the furniture. The field adopted the objection as a logo and kept the premise.

Einstein never accepted it, and the thing he refused was not the arithmetic — it was the ontology. His EPR argument was an offer: either the description is incomplete, or the world is nonlocal. Pick. Thirty years later John Bell turned that offer into a number, and the number went to experiment, and the experiments came back saying no local account reproduces these correlations. The measured world is nonlocal or it has no definite values before you look. There is no third door.

Bell also said, flatly, what most of the field would only mutter: that ordinary quantum mechanics is unprofessionally vague and ambiguous, working for all practical purposes while leaving the central question unanswered. He asked why the pilot-wave picture — an existing, working, nonlocal, deterministic account — was left out of the textbooks, and got no satisfying answer.

Hugh Everett removed the collapse law entirely. It works, and the bill is every outcome happening in a branch of its own. Bohr's circle dismissed him, his thesis was cut down before publication, and he left physics for defence analysis and never came back. Sixty years on the problem sharpened rather than dissolved: Frauchiger and Renner showed in 2018 that if quantum theory applies to observers who use quantum theory, rational agents derive contradictory facts about a single event. The theory cannot consistently describe its own use.

The repair

Decoherence: the environment measures the system, interference drains away, the classical world appears without anyone invoking collapse.

What the repair cost

Decoherence needs a system/environment split the theory does not supply, so the preferred basis is handed in by hand — and after all of it you still have a superposition, not an outcome. The Born rule remains an axiom bolted to the side.

Act Four · Quantum Field Theory & the Standard Model · 1973

The finest instrument ever built, and a drawer full of dials

Generating premise: fundamental fields with free couplings, a fundamental scalar Higgs, and a continuum underneath all of it. Fundamental fields in a continuum give divergences. Free couplings give numbers nobody can derive. A fundamental scalar gives a mass with nothing protecting it.

Top: the electron's magnetic moment — prediction against measurement, agreeing digit for digit past one part in a million million. Bottom: the same theory's parameter drawer, every dial measured and none derived, and the Higgs cancellation running thirty-four places before the survivor appears. Hover a dial for its name.

Both halves of this act are true at once, and that is what makes it the strangest chapter in the census. Nothing humans have ever built predicts better. Nothing humans have ever built asks to be believed less by the people who built it.

Dirac would not sign off on renormalisation. He called the procedure not sensible mathematics — infinities discarded arbitrarily because the answer comes out right if you discard them that way. Feynman, who won a Nobel Prize for the machinery, called it a dippy process and a shell game, and said the fact that it works has not stopped it from being hocus-pocus. Neither of them was being modest. They were pointing at the continuum.

Then the numbers. Nineteen to twenty-six free parameters — masses, mixing angles, couplings — every one measured, not one derived. Three generations of matter for no reason. Yukawa couplings spanning a factor of a million with no pattern. The Higgs mass held at 125 GeV by a cancellation running to one part in 10³⁴. The QCD angle θ, which has no business being small, measured below 10⁻¹⁰. And the vacuum's own energy, which the theory computes and the sky contradicts — by about 10¹²⁰, the worst quantitative miss in the history of the subject.

Pauli set the tone for the whole century of it in 1930. Needing to save conservation of energy in beta decay, he invented a particle he believed could never be detected, and wrote that he had done a terrible thing. He was right about the terrible thing and wrong about the detection — and the neutrino came back in the end to break the model that inherited it, because the Standard Model says the neutrino is massless and the oscillations say it is not.

The repair

Supersymmetry — a partner for every particle, cancelling the corrections and protecting the Higgs mass without tuning. An axion to zero the strong-CP angle.

What the repair cost

The LHC looked where the argument said to look and found nothing. The tuning is now worse than before the fix was proposed, and the axion is still missing.

Act Five · String Theory · 1984 onwards

Ten to the five hundred

Generating premise: buy finiteness and unification with extra dimensions, supersymmetry, and whatever number of vacua that costs. Six or seven dimensions have to be folded away, and the folding can be done in combinatorially many ways. Each way is a different universe of low-energy physics, and the theory contains no instrument for pointing at ours.

The landscape. Valleys scroll past without end; the counter runs toward 10⁵⁰⁰ and the marked one is ours — selected by the fact that we are standing in it, and by nothing else the theory can offer. Drag to travel; you will not reach the edge.

This act's entries are not contradictions. They are something a physicist can find harder to live with: a structure so accommodating that no measurement can disagree with it.

The mathematics is real and often beautiful, and the programme has paid out elsewhere — holography, black-hole entropy counting, tools that migrated into nuclear and condensed matter physics. What it has not produced, after four decades, is one distinctive number at one reachable energy. The string scale sits near Planck. The superpartners that the superstring requires did not appear at the LHC, so the breaking scale is pushed up again, as it has been pushed up before, with no principle setting where it stops.

Susskind's response was to take the landscape seriously and go anthropic: with 10⁵⁰⁰ vacua available, ours is the one compatible with observers, and that is the whole of the explanation. Gross has spent years refusing that trade, on the ground that it converts physics into a story about our own presence. Both are looking at the same fact. Neither has a way to break the tie from inside the theory.

Two structural bills sit under all of it. Perturbative strings are defined on a fixed background, which is precisely what general relativity says a theory of gravity must not need — and the non-perturbative definition that would fix this does not exist yet. And the corner of the theory that is actually under control is anti-de Sitter: negative cosmological constant, the wrong sign for the universe we live in.

The repair

Accept the landscape and select our vacuum anthropically — the multiverse as an explanatory principle.

What the repair cost

The predictions. If every low-energy physics is somewhere in the catalogue, no measurement can ever count against the catalogue.

Act Six · MOND · 1983

One knob, set by hand

Generating premise: a phenomenological force law with an inserted acceleration scale and no substrate underneath it. This act is in the census because MOND is the nearest mainstream relative of the framework at the end of this page. The same knife has to cut both, and it is held the same way for each.

The rotation curve that refuses to fall. Turn the knob — a₀ is a free constant, and one setting fits a whole population of galaxies. Then the cluster point arrives, at twice the distance from the line, and the knob has nothing left to give. Drag the dial.

Milgrom's law does something no dark-matter halo does: it predicts individual rotation curves from the visible matter alone, one number for the whole population, and it keeps being right about galaxies it was never fitted to.

The number is a₀ ≈ 1.2 × 10⁻¹⁰ m/s², and it was set by hand. Worse — or better, depending on where you think physics is going — it lands suspiciously close to cH₀/2π, a cosmological quantity that has no business appearing in the dynamics of a single galaxy. MOND cannot say why. It offers a force law, not a derivation of its own scale, and a scale you cannot derive is a scale someone else's theory will have to explain.

Then the failures, and they are honest ones. Clusters still need roughly twice the mass MOND can supply — the missing-mass problem is reduced, not removed. The Bullet Cluster shows lensing mass sitting away from the gas, which is the textbook argument against modifying the force law alone. Internal dynamics depend on the external field a system happens to sit in, so the strong equivalence principle goes. And there is no cosmology in it: no acoustic peaks, no nucleosynthesis, no structure growth.

The hardest blow was a single event. In August 2017 a neutron-star merger arrived as gravitational waves and as light, and the two arrived together to within a part in 10¹⁵. The relativistic completions of MOND had bought their extra dynamics with extra fields, and those fields made gravity travel at a speed other than c. One measurement, one afternoon, and that whole family of theories was ruled out.

The repair

TeVeS and its cousins — add tensor, vector and scalar fields until MOND becomes relativistic and can meet cosmology.

What the repair cost

GW170817. The added fields dispersed gravitational waves; the sky said the speed of gravity is c to fifteen decimal places, and the completions went with it.

Act Seven · ΛCDM · 1998 onwards

Ninety-five per cent, unseen

Generating premise: when an observation does not fit, add an invisible component rather than change the law. The model fits the microwave sky and the large-scale structure superbly, and it pays for the fit with two substances that have never been detected and an early-universe episode invented to repair the initial conditions.

Top: the budget — five per cent is everything ever seen, weighed or touched. Bottom: the Hubble tension, the distance ladder against the microwave background, two measurements of one number that do not overlap. Drag to sweep the error bars together; they will not meet.

Fritz Zwicky counted the Coma cluster in 1933, found the galaxies moving far too fast for the light they showed, and named what was missing dunkle Materie. The field ignored him for forty years, largely because he was difficult and because the measurement was hard to believe.

Vera Rubin made it impossible to ignore. Spiral after spiral, the rotation curves went flat where they should have fallen, and the discrepancy was not a marginal effect but a factor of ten. She said the ratio of dark to light matter is about the same as the ratio of our ignorance to our knowledge, and she was not being modest either.

Forty years of direct detection have now been run — deeper and deeper underground, tonne-scale targets, the sensitivity improving by orders of magnitude — and the result is null. Twenty-seven per cent of the universe is inferred from gravity and nothing else. Sixty-eight per cent more is a name attached to a number, w ≈ −1, with no microphysics behind it. And the same vacuum energy that Act Four could not compute is here again, off by 10¹²⁰, and additionally tuned to become important at roughly the moment we happen to be looking.

The tensions have not softened with better data — they have hardened. The local distance ladder says H₀ ≈ 73; the microwave background, run through the model, says ≈ 67. The gap is past five sigma and neither side has found the error. Lensing surveys find less structure than the CMB requires. On small scales the cold-dark-matter simulations predict cusps where cores are observed, swarms of satellites that are not there, and the satellites that are there sit in thin co-rotating planes that random debris has no business forming. BBN predicts three times the lithium-7 the old stars carry. JWST keeps finding galaxies too massive and too settled too early.

Inflation was invented to repair the horizon and flatness problems, and Alan Guth's idea did the job so elegantly that it became standard within a decade. Paul Steinhardt helped build it and now argues in public that as practised it cannot be falsified — the measure problem is unsolved, eternal inflation produces every outcome somewhere, and the initial conditions the inflaton itself needs are as special as the ones it was hired to explain. A fix that needs fixing.

The repair

Inflation smooths the horizon and flattens Ω; cold dark matter builds the structure; Λ runs the late acceleration.

What the repair cost

Ninety-five per cent of the energy budget is now two substances defined by what they are not — and the successes of the model are conditional on them.

Interlude · The whole census on one wall

Sixty-seven entries, counted

Everything from the seven acts, in one board, tallied live from the entries themselves. Filter by severity and watch where the contradictions actually sit — they are not spread evenly, and that is the first real clue.

incompleteness

Severity strings are the census's own. Where the source qualifies a label — logical-ish, logical-unproven, self-limiting, tamed, within rigid-body SR — the qualifier is carried on the entry and the entry is counted under its primary class. Nothing is promoted or demoted to make a number look better.

What the board shows before anyone argues about it

The contradictions cluster. They sit where a theory holds a wavefunction that must collapse, a continuum with no floor, a horizon with a singularity behind it, or a vacuum that must carry energy. Where a framework holds none of those, it has crises and gaps instead — MOND and string theory carry almost no logical entries, and they are not the better theories for it. The class of a theory's open items tells you about its premises, not about its quality.

Every shadow needs a wall

Each paradox in this census is cast by a premise. Take the premise away and the shadow has nothing to fall on — it does not get solved, it stops being generated. Twelve premises are listed on the left with what SDT holds instead. Click a row and the entries that lose their root go dark on the board below.

What is not claimed here

A row goes dark when the premise that manufactures it is absent — not when SDT has produced a better number. And this is the census's own twelve-row table, not an exhaustive mapping of all sixty-seven: the entries left lit are the ones the table does not address. Four of them carry a logical label — the rigid body in Act One, the gravitational pseudotensor, the projector algebra behind Kochen–Specker, and MOND's external field effect. Each belongs to furniture SDT does not own either, and none of them is claimed on this screen, because the source does not claim them. The rest are empirical and incompleteness entries: several are other people's unfinished business, and several are SDT's too. Those are named two screens from here, with what each one owes.
Act Nine · Spatial Displacement Theory

The list that came back empty

One substrate. One force — the occlusion of convergent throughput. One clock, the count of ticks, running everywhere at once. A shortest length. Real particles, wound tight, with boundaries you can measure. Nothing pulls.

The whole mechanism. Throughput converges on every boundary from every direction at once; a body occludes its share and casts a shadow; the second body is pushed into the shadow by the throughput still arriving on its far side. That is gravity, and charge, and the nuclear grip — one law, three domains. Drag the bodies.

Run the seven acts backwards and a pattern falls out that has nothing to do with anyone's cleverness. Every contradiction in this census is the price of a premise, and the premises are all removals or inventions made a century ago for reasons that were good at the time.

SDT does not hold them. There is no wavefunction to collapse, so there is nothing for a measurement problem to be about. There is no continuum without a floor, so a collapse has somewhere to stop and the infinities have nowhere to grow. There is no vacuum carrying zero-point energy, so there is no quantity that can be 10¹²⁰ wrong. There is no attraction sourced by mass, so there is no missing mass — the shadow does the holding and the shadow is cast by what is already there. And there is a frame: the lattice, and the tick, and a now that is the same count everywhere. The present that special relativity abolished is back, so the block universe, the conventional simultaneity and the disappeared time have nothing to stand on.

Not by construction. That phrase should be struck wherever it appears, including in the census this page walks. You cannot build a theory that dodges contradictions — there is no such move available to anybody. You can only run the work and read what comes back. Nothing was suppressed either: the exclusions here are exclusions of inputs — no G, no M, no wavefunction, no dark sector, no free parameter to fit — and refusing yourself inputs does not protect you from contradictions, it makes them far easier to find. Fewer knobs, fewer places to hide.

The count is zero because zero fell out. Hydrogen closes. The deuteron binds at 2.200 against a measured 2.224 MeV with no fitted scale. The closure schedule prints 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 126 from two closed forms and then keeps going to 184. A clock at the Sun's surface runs slow by exactly the depth it sits at, to three parts in ten thousand. A galaxy turns. At no point does one result turn round and contradict another, and at no point does the machinery forecast the place where it stops being true. No paradox exists because no paradox exists. None fell out. There was never one there to remove.

The hunt was run properly: the framework was pushed at the places it is thinnest, and what came back was debts — unfinished derivations — not contradictions. Those are on the next screen, named, with what each one owes.

Act Ten · The other side of the ledger

Five debts, stated flat

A gap is not a paradox — the rule from the first screen, applied here and not bent. These are places the framework is exposed and owes a result. They are unpaid, they are named, and none of them is a contradiction.

Debt · the big one
The reproduction debt

Having no measurement problem is bought with an obligation: reproduce, deterministically, what quantum mechanics gets right — two-slit interference, the Born statistics, and CHSH at 2√2. Bell's theorem says any such account must be nonlocal, and SDT has the resource for that, since the relay is one tick from every boundary and there is a frame. The resource is not the result. Until the numbers are on the table, no QM paradoxes is a true statement about premises and a promissory note about results. It goes first, not last.

Tension
The neo-Lorentzian bill

The frame has to hide itself — no preferred-frame effect has shown up to a part in 10¹⁸. Rods and clocks rescaling with lattice motion does that job, and the same logic predicts a ceiling that is not locally measurable. A real quantity nobody can point an instrument at is uncomfortable, and it is the mirror image of the one-way light speed from Act One. The bill: exhibit a second-order observable, or concede the frame is forever indirect.

Tension · the sharpest
The input and derivation graph

The permitted-input list carries α and m_p, and the framework claims to derive both — koppa at the hydrogen rung, and 6π⁵ for the mass ratio. You cannot assume and derive the same number without it being either a labelled consistency check or a circle. Both of those results are marked OPEN in the engine for exactly this reason. The dependency graph has to be published and acyclic: fix the irreducible seeds and demote everything else. This is the one place where the framework could manufacture a contradiction for itself if the labelling ever got lazy.

Debt
Stable orbits from pushing alone

A push-only convergence field has to produce closed ellipses and the right precession, not only the circular speed law v = c√(ϟ/r) — which already matches Kepler and carries Mercury geometrically. The full two-body problem from pure pushing is part shown, not finished. If pushing cannot make a stable ellipse, that is a real problem, and the burden is to complete the dynamics rather than restate the kinematics.

Debt · narrowing
The strong field

There is a horizon — z = ½ at r = 2ϟ, where the orbital speed is c/√2 and escape is c, landing on the Schwarzschild radius — and there is no singularity behind it: the core is the koppa dissolution surface at z = 1, r = ϟ, a one-third golden-spiral winding, throat of zero width carrying no matter. Owed from that structure: the EHT shadow, the ISCO, and the LIGO ringdown. The inspiral work is drafted; the echo signature is where this framework and general relativity part company and can be told apart.

The categorical difference, in one line

Their open items include contradictions and self-limiting forecasts. These open items are unfinished derivations. A theory can finish a derivation. It cannot finish a contradiction — it can only abandon the premise that caused it.

Sixty-seven wounds, and every one of them a premise arriving with its bill. Take the premises away and there is nothing left to pay. That is the whole argument.
