The Medium's
Reluctance to Let You Move

Mass has always been treated as a thing a body simply has. Here it is not a possession but a relationship — the cost of shifting the convergent pressure out of the way of a moving displacement. From that single idea come Newton's second law, the reason weight and stubbornness are the same, the speed limit, and why a fast thing grows heavy.

The diverted river

A particle is a volume the convergence cannot cross. What would have flowed through must flow around.

Recall that matter is a displacement — a knot that excludes a small volume of the lattice from the relay. The convergent throughput that would have passed straight through that volume is turned aside and made to flow around its boundary. That diverted flow is not incidental; it is the particle's rest energy. The famous E₀ = m₀c² is, read this way, simply the bookkeeping of how much convergence a displacement holds out of its path.

The dipole of motion

Standing still, the body is pressed evenly and feels nothing. Set it moving, and the balance tips.

A moving displacement runs into the fronts arriving ahead and away from those arriving behind. The even pressure of rest acquires a lean — heavier in front, lighter behind. This lean is a dipole, a one-sidedness, and it is not a metaphor: it is measured. Our own motion through the convergence rest frame is written across the microwave sky as a dipole of exactly this kind, a warmth ahead and a coolness behind of size ΔT/T = v/c ≈ 1.23 × 10⁻³.

Inertia is the reluctance

The tilted pressure pushes back against whatever tilted it.

Because the arrival is now heavier in front, it presses against the acceleration that made it so. That backward press is inertia — not a property stored inside the body, but the medium's resistance to having its flow reorganised. Measure it and you recover Newton's second law exactly, with the mass laid bare as a geometric quantity:

Why the two masses are one

For three centuries it was a coincidence begging to be explained. Here it cannot be otherwise.

A body's gravitational mass is the size of the shadow it casts in the pressure of others. Its inertial mass is the cost of reorganising that same pressure when it accelerates. But both are set by one and the same thing — the volume it displaces. Same volume, same medium, same number. The equivalence that Einstein had to elevate to a principle arrives here as a plain identity: the shadow and the stubbornness are two views of one geometry.

Mass is not a substance a thing contains. It is the medium's reluctance to let the thing be moved.

The ceiling, and the swelling

There is a limit to how far the balance can tip — and the closer you push it, the harder it fights.

The pressure arriving from behind can thin, but it cannot fall below nothing. When a body's speed approaches c, the trailing arrival empties entirely: there is no pressure left behind to reorganise, and so no way to push faster. That is the speed limit, and it is a consequence, not a decree. And as the rear empties, the cost of each further increment of speed climbs without bound — the body's resistance swells as m(v) = γ m₀. Relativistic mass is nothing but the emptying of the angular budget.

Each result follows from the convergence dipole of a moving displacement, and the tilt itself is not assumed — it is the very dipole COBE and Planck measured in our motion through the rest frame. What remains open is named: the displaced volume of the proton and electron, still to be read from the lattice topology.

That emptying angular budget is the thread into the next Law. Every particle is handed one allowance of speed, and must spend it on two things at once — turning inside itself, and travelling through the world. That is the Movement Budget.
